Several months ago, the horror stories of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) authoritarian “zero-Covid” lockdowns in Shanghai shocked the world. But while global media may have moved on from the story, too many Chinese citizens are still suffering from those deadly policies. The China Show’s co-hosts Winston and Matt (originally the first YouTubers in China) called attention to the “zero-Covid” policies still hurting the Chinese last week.
The lockdowns in Shanghai garnered international attention a few months ago, as people starved to death while locked in their homes, children and parents were separated based on Covid status, despairing imprisoned citizens committed suicide, and pets were killed by state employees. There’s a new area under lockdown, however: Hainan.
Show co-host Winston said, “Not only is it still continuing in Shanghai, in certain areas, to certain degrees, but” also in “the Hawaii of China,” Hainan.1 Winston said that many citizens of Shanghai who spent months locked up in their homes wanted to go on vacation and experience a little freedom after surviving the lockdowns. “They all get to Hainan, and then there’s a [Covid] breakout there, and now it’s all locked down.” Around 18% of the people locked down in Hainan were actually from Shanghai, Winston said. And of course, it being China, not only are they not allowed to leave Hainan, but they’re not allowed to go to the beach or even walk around the grounds of their hotels, and “everybody has to go for those daily, long queue PCR tests.”
Winston and Matt managed to get someone in Hainan to film what it’s like there, and they also shared video from Shanghai. Referring back to Shanghai, Winston commented, “People are not afraid of Covid, they’re afraid of being locked down.” With the horrific conditions the lockdowns created in Shanghai and elsewhere, that’s hardly surprising. A positive infection test can apparently cause a stampede of panicked people trying to get out of the building where the Covid-positive person is, so the people won’t have to be locked down.
“According to one of our people on the ground there, there’s no—there was a little bit of food being given out but no food was making it to the masses,” Matt explained, emphasizing why the situation can become a humanitarian crisis. Winston added that a five-star hotel in the Hainan area is reportedly providing food and that some tourists might be getting free rooms. In some hotels, however, there is price gouging, for instance with the original price way hiked up and then deceptively “cut” to a “50%” discount. In any case, in Hainan, a tourist hotspot, the streets are empty. “It’s kind of looking like Shanghai was looking like, and that’s definitely not a good sign,” Winston said. “This ‘zero-Covid’ policy [of the CCP] is absolutely horrendous.”
But the CCP doesn’t care how many of its people die. After all, the CCP is the greatest mass murderer of all time, responsible for 500 million deaths, and induced famine is one of the ways the CCP has killed massive numbers of their own people (in the tens of millions). The CCP is committing genocide against Uyghurs in Xinjiang—why should it care if its own Chinese people starve to death in price-gouging hotels?

The CCP appear on the cusp of a banking crisis of confidence. Doubling down on incarcerating the populous becomes 'necessary' when faced with the potential trigger of imminent collapse?
