The 'Squad's' Claim that Israel's Founding was a Catastrophe is Anti-Historical and Anti-Semitic
The “Squad” is at it again, pushing its anti-Semitic nonsense that is utterly unjust and anti-historical. As The Times of Israel reports:
“Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib on Monday introduced the first-ever Congressional resolution that would see the US formally recognize the Palestinian ‘Nakba’ or ‘catastrophe’ that coincided with the establishment of Israel
The initiative was submitted on the 74th anniversary of when Palestinians commemorate their displacement and dispossession during Israel’s War of Independence in 1948-1949.
The resolution was co-sponsored by fellow members of the so-called progressive Squad, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush along with Democratic Reps Betty McCollum and Marie Newman.”
Lawyer and George Mason University Prof. Eugene Kontorovich, however, explains that there was no “Palestinian state” a hundred years ago—Israel and the contested “West Bank” were part of the Ottoman Empire. The empire disintegrated post-WWI, and a nation called “Palestine” was created. . .as a Jewish nation. The Allies (Britain, France, America) and the League of Nations were recognizing that the Jews were the indigenous people of the region, which was called “Palestine” only because the Europeans were inheritors of the Roman mis-label for Israel (the Romans used the name rather as an insult than not, as the Philistines were the ancient enemies of the Jews). Israel finally became an official nation in 1948.
International law used the uti possidetis juris principle, which means “when a new country is created, its borders [must] match the borders of the previous geopolitical entity in that territory.” This principle gave Israel all of Judea, Jerusalem, Samaria, and Gaza (again, all according to that mandate for Palestine). But as soon as Israel declared its independence, it was attacked by Muslim (“Arab”) armies—and Jordan seized parts of Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria, which it then called the “West Bank.” Jews in those areas were expelled. According to international law, a war of aggression (which is undoubtedly what Israel had suffered from) cannot be used to change borders. And when Israel later took back the West Bank, it was simply restoring its borders to the original limits! Israel isn’t “occupying” the West Bank, the West Bank was invented by an anti-Israel aggressor after the land was stolen from Israel. The “Palestinian Authority” was not even established until 1994, and Israel, though it did not have to do so, has offered “Palestinians” (who are actually a conglomeration of other peoples) a state many times over the years. By rejecting the offers every time, “Palestinians” have made clear that they don’t want their own nation—they want to destroy Israel. Meanwhile, Muslim citizens of Israel enjoy more rights than the citizens of many Muslim nations.
“Palestinians” are controlled by terrorist groups like Hamas that not only constantly practice and support terrorism against Israel, but use their own people as human shields (even training child terrorist soldiers). They are, as I said above, a conglomeration of other peoples. They have no legitimate right to Israeli land, they are a terrorist, anti-Semitic organization that hates Israel because it is Jewish. And by supporting the “Palestinians’” lies, Tlaib and her ilk are attacking a peaceful, legal nation in favor of literal terrorists.
