I originally wrote this article last year, but the traditions here are timeless. I hope you and your family have a blessed Christmas and enjoy adding a new tradition! If there’s one thing modern American society does not have, it’s a meaningful connection to the past. The amount of historically ridiculous lies that are ubiquitous among us, the total fracture between the generations of families, the disdain for anything “old-fashioned”—it’s everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for innovation and progress, but only if it’s grounded in a knowledge of the past, with respect for the past’s achievements and the wisdom to overcome the past’s failings.
Re Krampus, Maria VonTrapp tells a very humorous story about their cook, who hid a burnt cake & then had to face the consequences, or should i say Krampsequences? Her book, The story of the Trapp Family is full of old fascinating stories/customs. Their priest, Fr. Wasner iirc, wrote a neat old book about Christmass customs. A blessed Advent!
