As Von Moltke said, “that men will stand and die in defence of their country is well accounted for and is taken into our strategy, but that they will retreat for 10 days and go on the offensive on the 11th is unheard of.”(first battle of the Marne WW1) -Washington’s army was really in retreat, 90% of the Continental army was gone. Further, the enemy was planning to cross with great force against Washington as soon as the river froze enough.
