Newsom’s ‘28th Amendment’ on Guns Is an Anti-Constitutional Power Play
“Do you know why there’s a Second Amendment? In case the government fails to follow the first one.” —Rush Limbaugh
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has been so successful at destroying his own state he now wants to destroy the rest of the country too. He is pushing for an anti-Bill of Rights “28th Amendment” to the U.S. Constitution to undermine Americans’ gun rights.
Newsom just proposed his 28th Amendment, and don’t be fooled by his claims that it would be “leaving the 2nd Amendment unchanged and respecting America’s gun-owning tradition.” Nor should you accept his assertion that “California’s nation-leading gun safety laws serve as a valuable blueprint for other states and Congress to save lives.” In fact, homicides and violent crime increased in California in 2021 (as in 2020), under Newsom’s leadership.
The Washington Examiner had a helpful piece explaining why Newsom’s proposed changes wouldn’t solve gun violence; indeed, there’s a good deal of data or real-world attempts behind three of Newsom’s four proposals to undermine his claims. You can read more details at the Examiner link above.
Then there’s the fact that this is, as J Gibson wrote for Concealed Carry, not a safety effort but a “power grab.” Newsom doesn’t give a hoot about saving lives or protecting Americans (which is why he and fellow California Democrats have policies that fuel a crime crisis); he wants a population that can’t protect itself from government or anyone else. J Gibson said that all of Newsom’s proposals for the “28th Amendment” infringe on the 2nd Amendment, and I think the Founding Fathers would agree. Anyone who wants to restrict lawful gun ownership is suspect.
Founder George Mason, called the “Father of the Bill of Rights” (that very Bill of Rights which contains the Second Amendment), noted, “Forty years ago, when the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great-Britain, the British parliament was advised … to disarm the people. That it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them.” Now Americans again face a gun-grabbing government trying to create a dictatorship: our own.
Meanwhile, George Washington wrote “That no man should scruple, or hesitate a moment, to use arms in defence of so valuable a blessing” as freedom. And Thomas Jefferson argued that gun control policies only hurt honest citizens, not criminals: “The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes…. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants.” Indeed, according to CrimeResearch.org, between 1998 and May 2022, a whopping 9 in 10 mass shootings occurred in gun-free zones.
As I have previously explained, the rights of the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights depend on the Second Amendment. We can only be a free people so long as we are armed. But that is exactly why the Marxist Democrats, including Newsom and Joe Biden, are taking aim at gun rights. It’s all about making America less free.
