The three major public universities of the state of Iowa made a surprising but praiseworthy decision to shut down their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) offices and/or reduce DEI staff, looking toward intellectual diversity instead. Imagine actually trying to fulfill the dreams of the heroes of America’s civil rights movement, instead of putting harmful woke politics over everything!
The move isn’t a cure-all, and it’s only in one state, but it’s a hopeful sign and a step in the right direction. As of right now, all three universities will include some DEI positions to meet federal standards, but they will be removing many of their former DEI positions. The Iowa universities should now put in the hard work to reverse the indoctrination of DEI, thus undermining the influence of those DEI employees still at the universities. In any case, other public universities should be following Iowa’s example. If you want to know just how dangerous DEI is, it’s DEI programs, staff, and departments that have been particularly zealous in promoting violent anti-Semitism and anti-Israel hatred in our institutions of “higher learning.”
The mobs of crazed students screaming genocidal slogans and waving signs in support of vicious terrorists were brainwashed by DEI to support radical Islam and to hate Jews. That’s precisely why poisonous DEI (which encourages many stripes of racism and prejudice) needs to be eradicated from our institutions.
“Iowa’s three major public universities have made the[ir] decision…On Thursday, the presidents of Iowa State, the University of Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa told the state’s Board of Regents of the various changes they would be making to their respective DEI programs on campus…[At] University of Iowa, five currently unfilled positions related to DEI are to be dissolved, while the current DEI office will be moved to a new division entitled the Division of Access, Opportunity, and Diversity.
Iowa State, meanwhile, has decided to close its Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office, which will eliminate five DEI-related positions with its closure. The University of Northern Iowa is taking even more substantial measures by shuttering its Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice Office and eliminating its Chief Diversity Officer position.
Nonetheless, all three universities will be maintaining some DEI-related offices, in order to ensure federal and state accreditation requirements are met.
One area in which these universities seem to be interested in increasing diversity is the realm of diversity of opinion. University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson announced that the university would start a civic dialogue program in the fall in order to ‘get students to think about how do you come to the table? How do you listen to others who are different from you?’…The University of Northern Iowa is undertaking a similar initiative with its new Center for Civics education, which will ‘promote the values of free speech, civic leadership, public service, and participatory citizenship’ according to University of Northern Iowa President Mark Nook.”
Promoting free speech is a good step, if the universities have a traditional American, constitutional understanding of free speech, rather than the fake “free speech” that just means promoting porn books and chanting “kill the Jews”. By cutting DEI staff and encouraging free speech, Iowa universities can start to counteract the harms of woke ideology.
In our modern chaotic world, sometimes it’s the small victories that mean a great deal. Iowa universities have started to de-toxify from DEI, and we can hope that not only will Iowa continue down that promising path, but that other state universities will follow suit.
