In a thoroughly tyrannical and chilling move, the state of Indiana removed a boy from his Catholic parents’ custody because they refused to pretend that he could become a girl. After legal defeats, even though the state acknowledges the only “issue” is refusal to bow to LGBTQ ideology, the desperate parents are petitioning the U.S. Supreme Court.
It is so deeply disturbing that, in America, in a state with a Republican governor, the government can simply steal a child away from his parents because of their religious beliefs. America is rapidly turning into a nation like Soviet Russia or Communist China, where citizens have no rights, including no parental rights.
The parents’ filing explained that the state of Indiana “found the parents fit but still removed the child over an ideological dispute.” That is a total violation of the Constitution. “Although Indiana found all allegations of abuse and neglect unsubstantiated, it refused to return [the child] home, substituting the judgment of the state for that of admittedly fit parents,” the filing added, per Catholic News Agency (CNA).
Because the parents—Jeremy and Mary Cox—tried to get the boy therapy instead of affirming the biological impossibility of his supposed gender transition, they lost their son to foster care, where their only visitations with him were at his own discretion, a couple hours a week (watch a video on Twitter/X).
“This is what every parent is afraid of. We love our son and wanted to care for him, but the state of Indiana robbed us of that opportunity by taking him from our home and banning us from speaking to him about gender,” the Coxes said, expressing their hope that the Supreme Court would bring them justice and prevent the same horrific experience from happening to any other parents and children.
Transgender/LGBTQ youth have a much higher risk of depression and suicide, and it is biologically impossible to change one’s sex. Yet in open defiance of what is best both for the child and his parents, this confused young boy was taken away from his parents to be placed in a home that would only encourage his mental illness. From CNA:
‘Mary and Jeremy Cox refused to accept their son’s self-declared female identity in 2019, instead seeking therapy to address what they saw as underlying mental health concerns.
The Indiana government in 2021 began investigating the Cox family after learning that they refused to address their son by his chosen identity. The government subsequently removed their son from their home, placing him in another home that “affirmed” his transgender beliefs.
The state government subsequently dropped abuse allegations against the couple, though it still argued that the “disagreement over gender identity” was distressing to the child and was contributing to an ongoing eating disorder. Subsequent court decisions upheld the decision to keep the child out of the Coxes’ custody.’
The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty announced the Coxes’ SCOTUS filing. Becket’s VP and senior counsel Lori Windham said, “Tearing a child away from loving parents because of their religious beliefs, which are shared by millions of Americans, is an outrage to the law, parental rights, and basic human decency.” She also warned about the potentially widespread disaster this mentality could create, with countless families in danger of losing custody in future for not agreeing with the government’s leftist, crazy ideology: “If this can happen in Indiana, it can happen anywhere.”
